Cruising Guide to the Abacos and the Northern Bahamas

As most of you know, certainly those who have read my book, I’ve been flying in the Bahamas for many years.

That experience has lead me to recommend general aviation to others who need to get to and from the Bahamas.  It is a great way to make crew changes in those out of the way places, when commercial air transport just may not fit the need.  Unfortunately, not everyone has their own airplane, or knows how to fly.

A visitor to the website asked me to put together a little information for the benefit of those who don’t fly their own planes, but might wish to enjoy the convenience which a charter flight might offer.  Many people when facing the need to travel simply don’t think of this option, and rarely will a travel agent offer it.

Once when I was in Treasure Cay, I needed a part for my airplane, and couldn’t wait for conventional shipping.  I was able to charter a plane out of St. Augustine, FL to bring me the needed part for far less than it would have cost me to return home on a commercial flight, leaving my stranded plane.

There are a number of companies, on both side of the Stream who fly charters.  Some have been in business a long time, and there is always a new company around.  Several fixed base operators and flight schools in Florida offer charters as a sort of “side line”, and there are a few, who will if you are a licensed pilot, will actually rent you an airplane for the trip over.  If you are a pilot, and have never had the pleasure of flying in these islands, you should try this sometime.

Abaco Air

has been running a air charter operation out of Marsh Harbour for over 25 years. They are licensed to operate in the Bahamas, of course, but also make frequent trips to South Florida.  You can often get a single seat on one of their planes for scheduled service to Moores Island and North Eleuthera.  Their phone number is (242) 367-2266, or of course visit their website.

National Air Transport

(formerly Concierge Air out of Palm Beach, FL) currently operates a charter operation based out of the Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

They have a wide variety of piston and jet aircraft, but as an example, you can charter a 5 passenger Piper Aztec to Treasure Cay for $630.00 plus taxes and fees.  If you can use all five seats, this can be a very cost effective way to get to Abaco.  They will also haul cargo at the same rate.

Their airplanes are clean and well maintained, the passenger terminal is comfortable and uncrowded.  Rental cars are available at their terminal. You can reach them by phone at (888)-271-0502 or (561)-483-5070, and of course at their website.

The next time you have a group, ready to head for Abaco, try chartering a plane, you may be in for a pleasant surprise.
